Collaboration with project partners for the furniture industry

Henkel develops with its project partners high-performance adhesives for surface lamination in the furniture industry. Customers have expressed the wish that the technology be extended to cater for laminates other than just decorative finishing film – an application for which the Henkel adhesive Technomelt CHS 700 was conceived. As this adhesive has virtually no open time, i.e. the time window during which adhesive bonding remains possible, a new process had to be developed in harness with project partners HOMAG and NORDSON. The result is a kind of hot sealing process.

However, the requirements that have to be met when bonding PP film are more extensive. Due to the dimensional changes that PP film undergoes under the influence of temperature, the newly developed adhesive needed to exhibit more flexibility. And the results produced by Henkel’s development chemists are impressive indeed: Technomelt CHS 710 is a hotmelt that can be processed on existing facilities without problem. The application temperature could be reduced by up to 30 degrees Celsius.

Multifunctional electroceramic coatings

Under the brands Loctite and Bonderite, Henkel is able to offer a select range of electroceramic coatings (ECC) for various engine and exhaust system applications. Suitable for aluminum, titanium, magnesium and their alloys, these coatings enable such metals to be used in the manufacture of light constructions that would normally require steel, thus greatly reducing vehicle weight. With beneficial tribological properties leading in particular to reduced wear, Henkel’s electroceramic coatings also contribute significantly to increasing engine component efficiency and saving fuel. Tests also show that ECC helps reduce harmful engine emissions by diminishing the quantity of nitrogen oxides produced during fuel combustion. Further, diesel engines are found to be less noisy, thus meeting the ever present need for quieter vehicles. Henkel’s electroceramic coatings further combine outstanding corrosion protection with high resistance to extreme thermal loading, satisfying the prime prerequisites for, say, exhaust system and turbocharger component longevity.
