1885

Pharmacist Franz Anhalt from Kollberg puts AoK Seesand Mandelkleie on the market.


1898

The history of the Schwarzkopf company starts in Berlin. Hans Schwarzkopf, a qualified chemist, opens a small drugstore with a separate perfume section. Nobody could have predicted that his business would go on to become one of the most important haircare companies in the world.


1903

Hans Schwarzkopf develops his first product - powder shampoo. Until this point, hair was always washed using universal washing soap or with expensive oils. The new packet costing 20 pfennigs is an immediate success, allowing for quick and easy hair washing without unpleasent chalk residues.


1904

Hans Schwarzkopf supplies his "shampoo with the black head" to every drugstore in Berlin. The first international connections are established in Holland and Russia.

1927

Hans Schwarzkopf introduces the first liquid shampoo to the market. The demand is overwhelming. The company expands. Schwarzkopf founds the "Institute for Hair Hygiene", the very first training center for hairdressers.


1933

Onalkali

The year that witnesses the birth of the prototype for all modern shampoo. "Onalkali" is the world's first non-alkaline shampoo.


1947

Introduction of Poly Color liquid hair colorant by TheraChemie GmbH Düsseldorf.


1947

Schwarzkopf introduces the first cold perm to Germany. It represents a hairdressing revolution. Now women can permanently reshape their hair without heating it to almost 100 degrees.

1949

The arrival of "Schauma", the most successful shampoo of all time.

1950

TheraChemie is integrated into the Henkel Group.


1953

Transfer of all shares of Dreiring-Werke KG, Krefeld, to Persil GmbH/wholly-owned subsidiary of Henkel.

1954

Launching of the Fa care line by Dreiring-Werke KG.

1955

This is followed by "Taft", the "liquid hairnet" which was the first hairspray to appear in Germany. Due to the product´s popularity, the term "taften" (to "taft") is coined in Germany during the post-war economic boom. "Taft" becomes a synonym for hairspray.

1960

Igora Royal! The classic hair colorant. The Schwarzkopf silhouette even appears on film posters.


1969

Formation of Henkel Khasana GmbH, Düsseldorf, as a marketing company for body care products and cosmetics.

1972

Hairdressers are impressed by the "Schwarzkopf method", the first systematic approach to the world of perms which fuses products, consultation, technology and training in a single unified and methodical whole.


1977

Founding of Henkel Kosmetik GmbH, Düsseldorf. It assumes the sales activities of Henkel Khasana GmbH and TheraChemie GmbH, which had previously operated separately in the market.

1980

Schwarzkopf assumes a pioneering role as the first cosmetics manufacturer to convert to CFC-free aerosols for all its sprays.


1982

Acquisition of Bonetti (Diadermine).

1983

Henkel Kosmetik takes over AoK.

1986

Acquisition of Le Chat.

1991

Launch of the plant-based colorant IGORA BOTANIC, reflecting a trend towards natural products.


1992

Henkel Kosmetik takes over Barnängen.

1993

The Schwarzkopf Design Award receives the "Innovation Award for Packaging".

1995

Henkel takes over Schwarzkopf and thus becomes one of the leading suppliers in the field of hair cosmetics in Europe.

1999

Henkel takes over the Los Angeles based company Dep Corp. and the Greek company Rilken.

2000

Henkel and Lion, Tokyo, form a joint venture and jointly operate their haircolorants businesses through the Yamahatsu Sangyo Group.


2004

The purchase of The Dial Corporation, Scottsdale/Arizona, is the biggest acquisition in the history of the company to date. This renowned US detergent and cosmetics manufacturer gives Henkel a strong foothold on the North American market. Henkel also acquires the American cosmetics company Advanced Research Laboratories (ARL), that has developed and marketed innovative, high-quality hair cosmetics for over 20 years.
Fa, in 1954 the first luxury soap to combine cleansing and skin care with exotic fragrances, celebrated its golden anniversary as a brand in 2004. Today Fa still refreshes people in 146 countries and is thus Henkel's most international cosmetics brand.
