The Laundry & Home Care business unit is the cornerstone of Henkel’s success story: It all started with a product from this business sector. In 1876, Fritz Henkel founded the company Henkel & Cie in Aachen, Germany. The company’s first product was a laundry detergent based on sodium silicate, named “Universal-Waschmittel” (universal detergent).
Since then, this branded consumer goods business has grown into a globally active unit with well-known brands, such as Persil, Purex or Pril. For consumers around the world, our brand names have become an integral part of their daily lives. In the markets of relevance to us, our Laundry & Home Care business sector enjoys leading positions on a worldwide scale.

In 2013, the Laundry & Home Care business accounted for 4,580 million euros sales which equal 28% of total Henkel sales. Strong brands and innovations that offer added value for consumers provide the basis for our strategy of profitable growth. Organically, we succeeded in increasing sales by 5.7%. Through central and efficient management of our innovation process and deepened insights into the purchasing habits of consumers, we are able to quickly identify and respond to consumer trends, and effectively convert these into new products. In the profitable mature markets of Western Europe and North America, we hold leading positions with our brands. Based on this, we plan to further expand the share of sales from emerging markets, particularly Eastern Europe, Africa/Middle East and Latin America.
