Frequently Asked Questions
What is Autodeposition and Aquence®?
AUTODEPOSITION is a patented, waterborne, organic coating process using chemical rather than electrical energy to coat metal parts with a functional and uniform coating.
"AQUENCE® is a registered trade name for coating products supplied by Henkel." (ACC ® is also a registered trademark)
Is it easy to apply?
The thickness of the coating is time and temperature dependent. The coating itself becomes "self-limiting" as the reaction slows with the thickness of the film. That is why autodeposition creates a uniform coating, even in hidden or recessed areas. The final result provides a functional coating that is tough and resistant to aggressive environments.
Are Aquence® coatings approved for use on automotive parts?
The following is a list of automotive OEM approvals for Aquence® Coatings:
General Motors Corporation | GM-998-4132
- GM 4350-M (336 A)
- 1,000 hours neutral salt spray
- Cyclic cosmetic corrosion
- 2 year underbody requirement / 10 year function GM 9540 P
Ford Motor Company | ESB-M2P133-A | ESB-M64J27
- Salt Spray, gravelometer, physical testing
- 1,000 hours neutral salt spray
- Cyclic cosmetic corrosion
- 4 year underbody requirement / 10 year function APG/ APGE
Chrysler Corporation | PS-6061
- Salt Spray, gravelometer, physical testing
- 1,000 hours neutral salt spray
- Cyclic cosmetic corrosion
- 40,000 miles / 100,000 miles function
- On vehicle proving ground test
Toyota, Nissan, Honda, BMW, Volkswagen
- 1,000 hours neutral salt spray
- Cyclic cosmetic corrosion
- CCT
Note: Performance is dependent on part application and substrate.
Why would I choose to use Aquence® vs. another type of coating?
- Environmental air / water / energy regulations
- Improved corrosion / performance warranties
- Competitive demand for lower applied cost
- Customer need for global sourcing ability
- Increased outsourcing of non-strategic operations
What is the history of the coating?
- Invented in 1969 by Wilbur Hall & Lester Steinbrecher of Amchem Products
- Generation I: 600 Series products 1974 – 1983
- Generation II: 700 Series products 1983 - Present
- Generation III: 800 Series products 1987 - Present (90% of all current customers)
- Generation IV: 900 Series products 2000 - Present
Where does the brand AQUENCE® come from?
For 30 years, the brand for autodeposition coatings has been known as "Autophoretic". At the strong demands of the automotive customers and markets, Henkel has made significant investments for the last two years in the autodeposition coating technology in order to develop new products which will expand the performance and substrate use. For this reason, and with the launch of new coatings for the automotive and ACE frame and chassis applications, Henkel decided to re-launch the technology into the new markets with a new brand; "AQUENCE". The name "AQUENCE is the combination of the words "AQUA" and "SEQUENCE" reflects the intentions by Henkel to provide a water-based environmentally responsible coating (AQUA) and that it will belong to an simple and efficient application process (SEQUENCE).
Henkel announced the new brand in February of 2008 and will gradually move all autodeposition products under this new and exciting brand image.
