On track to success

Aiming to meet the rising technological demands of the railroad industry through practical solutions, Henkel is presenting itself at InnoTrans 2010 in Berlin as an expert partner for adhesives, sealants and surface treatments. Visitors to the Henkel booth in Hall 8.2 will find a 360 degree panorama of products and services for manufacturing, assembly and maintenance of rail vehicles and railroad infrastructure equipment.

As the global leader in adhesives, sealants and surface treatments, Henkel is deeply familiar with the railroad industry and its specific requirements. Complex manufacturing processes, compliance with the most stringent safety standards, and the improvement of cost efficiency and eco-performance call for tailor-made system solutions from a single source. With its new partnering concept, Henkel is therefore supporting companies from the rail industry by offering them access to an all-encompassing value chain – from technical consulting and implementation of new production processes to the provision of an extensive product portfolio, backed up by practical training of their staff.

Focus on the entire value chain
From manufacturing and assembly to maintenance, Henkel offers a vast product portfolio for rail vehicles and systems under its leading brands Loctite, Teroson, Multan and P3. The range covers the complete spectrum of high-performance engineering adhesives, permanently elastic sealants as well as advanced solutions for metalworking, surface treatments and cleaning. All of these different technologies deliver successful results in a wide variety of applications. One example is the development of new systems to improve crash behavior. But high-performing Henkel products are also used in maintenance to seal flanges and threaded connections, to repair insulated rail joints, or to clean the exteriors of rail cars and wagons.

Among its current innovations that also offer real added value in terms of sustainability, Henkel is presenting a new generation of water-miscible metal cutting fluids. Unlike classic product concepts, Multan 71-2 with its patented emulsifier technology requires no addition of or topping up with bactericides, thus considerably improving health and safety at work. At the same time, the new metal cutting fluids show outstanding process stability even when the emulsions have been in use for prolonged periods, while still providing the same high level of quality and performance. Multan 71-2 is suitable for many different kinds of processing from rough machining to grinding and has already proven its worth in practice in numerous customer applications.

Henkel has also achieved another development leap in the area of maintenance with its new medium and high strength threadlockers Loctite 2400 and 2700. These two products have a “white” material safety data sheet, which means that according to the tough regulations of (EC) No. 1907/2006 - ISO 11014-1, they do not carry any hazard symbols, risk or safety phrases. The new threadlockers are a further active contribution to improving safety at work – without repair shops having to compromise in any way on performance. When cured, they show excellent resistance to most industrial chemicals and can withstand operating temperatures up to 150°C.

Finally, but no less importantly, Henkel also provides key value to the railroad industry with its high-quality cleaning solutions. The latest example here is the P3 Scribex 400 series for maintenance. The cleaners in this product family remove all known bitumen-based and synthetic resin graffiti spray paints from non-porous surfaces. They are exceptionally easy and above all safe to use and can be applied manually without the need for any equipment. P3 Scribex 400 already performs perfectly at temperatures as low as 5°C. After a short contact time of five to ten minutes, the cleaner can be washed off. The graffiti remover also scores in terms of environmental protection: all of the products in the P3 Scribex 400 series contain no NMP, NEP, DMSO or terpenes.
