Dorus

The purchase of Dorus, one of the most recognized and respected trademarks in woodworking adhesives, enhanced Henkel’s ability to serve its customers. By adding Dorus wood glues to Henkel’s own proven product brands, customers can select from a well-balanced range of products renowned for their consistent high quality.

The Dorus brand, backed by global customer service support from Henkel, provides complete woodworking solutions for customers around the world.

Dorus has served the woodworking and furniture industry for more than 70 years. However, the origin of the brand dates back to 1893, when August Schieber founded the Schieber glue factory in Bopfingen, Germany. The Dorus name, first registered in 1935, is an acronym of Doktor Rudolf Schieber, grandson of August Schieber.

The first milestone in the brand’s history was the launch of industrial-scale production of dispersion adhesives at Bopfingen in 1950. This was followed by a rapidly accelerating stream of innovations, including the 1963 introduction of an innovative edgebanding hotmelt (DORUS HK 3) that advanced the technique of automatic furniture manufacturing.

In 1971, Dorus devised the first profile-wrapping hotmelt for the woodworking and furniture industry. In 1980, the company became a pioneer in softforming, with hotmelts that both accelerated and simplified the coating of contoured furniture edges.

The Dorus brand was integrated into the Henkel group in 1995. Its tradition of innovation has continued into the 21st century with the 2001 market launch of the first polyurethane hotmelt adhesives in granular form and, in 2002, the first 1-component 3D adhesive, which eliminated the need for mixing and dramatically reduced customers' total process costs.

In 2009 the wood and construction adhesives that were part of the acquisition from National Starch were incorporated into the Dorus family of products, providing additional global strength to the brand in North America and Asia.

As more companies focus on “green” solutions and environmental responsibility, Dorus is there once again with products and technologies that allow our customers to eliminate the use of formaldehyde-based adhesives.  These lines of ecologically compatible and friendly products allow Henkel to serve the 21st century needs of our customers.
