Innovation from Henkel represents an achievement in adhesive formulation
New Starbucks EarthSleeve™ saves nearly 100,000 trees
With Henkel adhesive solutions and LBP Manufacturing’s know-how in on-the-go packaging, this new products’ decrease of raw fiber material by 34% and increase of post-consumer content by 25% does so without sacrificing performance or function. With nearly three billion hot cup sleeves produced in the United States in 2011 and Starbucks representing nearly half of the marketplace, this material evolution will have a substantial impact on the packaging industry. “This product represents how the integration of our environmental values and collaboration with like-minded organizations can create significant impact”, said Cliff Burrows, president of the Americas for Starbucks.
In addition to substantial decreases in raw material makeup and a new total usage of 85% post-consumer fiber content, the fully compostable EarthSleeve™ also reduces the overall environmental impact of the transportation of the sleeves. "The introduction of the EarthSleeve™ represents an achievement in adhesive formulation," said John Meccia, Vice President Paper Converting for Henkel Corporation, who together with his team solved the challenge to develop an adhesive that effectively facilitates the removal of fiber. "The implication of our work on the environment is what makes this a real accomplishment."
