Offering exemplary manufacturing cost-efficiency, pasting is among the most important of the post-print process technologies. And hotmelts offer a particularly decisive advantage in such applications: because they cool within seconds, yet produce an almost instant adhesive bond of sufficient strength to enable high production speeds. Hence Henkel will be providing an overview of the performance capabilities of its Technomelt hotmelts at the 2009 Frankfurt Book Fair.

With its range of emission-reduced polyurethane hotmelt adhesives (PUR hotmelts), Henkel is setting new standards of occupational health and safety in the graphic arts industry. The innovative adhesives of the Purmelt MicroEmission series are a response to the growing awareness of the need for sustainable production processes in the industry and are recommended by accident insurance institutions. At Frankfurt Book Fair 2009, the Company is presenting not only improved products for spine binding, but also emission-reduced PUR hotmelts for side gluing and endpapering.

When processing magazines and other soft cover products, bookbinders are faced with a constant worry. Since conventional PUR hotmelts take up to eight hours to cure, reliable quality checks are only possible after the completion of an entire job, even in the case of large print runs. In the worst case, this can mean a high level of wastage and complaints and generate high costs. Henkel is now taking this weight off bookbinders’ minds. At Frankfurt Book Fair 2009, the Company is presenting a PUR adhesives system that part-cures in a matter of minutes with the aid of UV light and permits immediate quality checks.

End of September will bring the who’s who of the photovoltaic industry to the 24th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference in Hamburg. At the accompanying trade fair (September 21 – 24) Henkel shows a broad variety of solutions covering the entire photovoltaic process chain. Today, the Shareholders’ Committee of Henkel AG & Co. KGaA elected Simone Bagel-Trah as its new Chairwoman. Bagel-Trah takes over this office from Albrecht Woeste who has been a member of the committee since 1976 and became its Chairman in 1990. This coming Tuesday, Simone Bagel-Trah is also due to be elected Chair of Henkel’s Supervisory Board. This completes the transition from the fourth generation of the Henkel family to the fifth. The change at the top of these two supervisory bodies had already been announced at the Henkel Annual General Meeting of spring 2008.

The whole world of welding technology will be in the spotlight at the 17th international ESSEN WELDING FAIR. From September 14 to 19, 2009, the most comprehensive international fair in the sector will present a complete overview of the latest developments and innovations relating to all aspects of joining, cutting and coating. More than 1,000 exhibitors from 42 nations will be present in Essen, among them Henkel – for the first time.

Within the beverage sector, drinktec is regarded as a premier forum for innovations with global reach. This world-leading trade show, to be held at Munich’s Neue Messe site between September 14 and 19, will be showcasing 1,500 exhibitors from some 70 countries and is expected to attract around 70,000 visitors from more than 160 countries. Henkel will also be around in Munich, presenting a range of sustainable solutions for the beverage industry.

International consumer goods manufacturer Henkel has once again been included as a leader in its sector in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. The Index lists corporations that follow the principles of sustainable development in their business operations.

In the packaging industry, significant resources are often allocated to the job of cleaning adhesive residues from laminating machines. Indeed, manufacturers of flexible packaging invariably find themselves using large quantities of solvent-containing cleaning agents of the type subject to special labeling requirements. With the new threadlockers Loctite 2400 and Loctite 2700 Henkel once again asserts its position as a technology leader. The latest innovations to come out of the company’s Dublin labs are a medium and a high-strength threadlocker with a “white” Material Safety Data Sheet.

International consumer goods manufacturer Henkel has garnered honors in two renowned US communications competitions. For the fourth time in a row, the company received the highest accolade in the roll of the world’s best with the League of American Communications Professionals (LACP) conferring platinum on the 2008 Henkel annual report in the “Consumer Consumables – Household/Personal” category. And in the globally established Stevie International Business Awards, Henkel’s new training film explaining the company’s corporate branding strategy garnered gold.

Henkel has made a gain of 20 places in the annual survey of the world’s 500 highest-revenue companies published by the US business magazine Fortune. In the overall ranking, Henkel holds position number 448 compared to 468 last year. And for the first time, Henkel has also gained entry this year in the list of companies making the biggest jump in profits, taking 36th place in that ranking.

As scientific forums, the Nobel Prize-Winner Conferences held in Lindau are quite unique. Every year since 1951, young researchers from different countries have been meeting with Nobel Prize-winners at this town on Lake Constance. From June 28 to July 3, a total of 580 students from 67 countries are discussing aspects of sustainable chemistry with 23 Nobel Prize-winners. This year for the first time, Henkel facilitated the participation of 60 chemistry students from 20 countries.

The use of hotmelt adhesives is becoming increasingly popular in textile lamination. When deciding on new plant investments, manufacturers are tending more and more to opt for the hotmelt lamination alternative – simply because of the many advantages that this offers over conventional technologies.  As a world leader in the production of industrial adhesives, Henkel has a range of innovative product solutions for textile lamination to showcase at this year’s Techtextil trade fair in Frankfurt/Main, Germany.

In the fall of 2008, Henkel launched its second international student competition under the name ‘Henkel Innovation Challenge’. Now the finals in Brussels have just come to an end. The eleven best student teams from throughout Europe presented their ideas before an international jury comprised of Henkel managers. As ‘business development managers’, they elaborated a concept for a Henkel product in the year 2050. The winners were the team representing the Netherlands studying at the Rotterdam School of Management. These upcoming talents presented a compelling concept for an innovative, environmentally compatible detergent able to function without water.

Henkel has once again received public recognition as a socially responsible company: for the second time running, the Ethisphere Institute and Forbes Magazine, both of the USA, have included Henkel in their list of the “World’s Most Ethical Companies”. Only two German companies have made it to this list. Among the selection criteria are corporate social responsibility, management style and innovative strength.

Today’s Annual General Meeting of Henkel AG & Co. KGaA in Düsseldorf provided around 2,500 shareholders with an overview of the company’s development and performance in fiscal 2008.

Albrecht Woeste, Chairman of the Supervisory Board and of the Shareholders' Committee of Henkel AG & Co. KGaA announced at today's Annual General Meeting of the company that he would be retiring from these offices in September 2009 and would be proposing to the members of both corporate bodies that they elect Dr. Simone Bagel-Trah as his successor. This handing-over of the corporate baton from the fourth to the fifth generation of the Henkel family was first announced last year.

A jury of twelve experts from industry, academia, specialist magazines, and business consultants honored Henkel’s Laundry & Home Care business sector on April 3 with the “Supply Chain Management Award 2009” for the successful global reorganization of its supply chain. The award is presented annually to the manufacturer with the best supply chain.

Customers are the real winners in Henkel’s recent acquisition: The merging of Acheson’s Forging and Pressure Die Casting competencies into the Henkel fold is creating an exceptionally broad portfolio of solutions for the metal industry.

Henkel has today successfully placed a 1 bn Euro Senior Bond. The bond has a term of 5 years and matures on March 19, 2014. The bond pays a coupon of 4.625 percent and has been issued at a price of 99.86 percent. Closing is expected to take place on March 19, 2009. The bond will be listed at the Luxembourg Stock Exchange.

U.S. retail giant Wal-Mart has selected Henkel to receive the “Wal-Mart Sustainability Award". Henkel was recognized as the one company demonstrating the most comprehensive approach to sustainability and making a substantial contribution to Wal-Mart’s sustainability strategy.

According to the annual survey conducted by the American business magazine Fortune, Henkel is Germany’s most admired company. The Fortune ranking of the “World’s Most Admired Companies” is one of the most renowned corporate rankings worldwide. On the international front, moreover, Henkel took second place behind Procter & Gamble in the “Soaps and Cosmetics” category.

The “Best Innovation Contributor 2008” goes to Rohm and Haas for the best contribution of an external partner delivering consumer-relevant innovation. The “Best Supply Performance 2008” is presented to BASF for its outstanding operational supply performance.

Energy efficiency and the climate compatibility of processes and products are among the key quality criteria of the future. Henkel has long been committed to maximizing energy efficiency in both production and the ensuing products. Now Henkel is also taking part in Germany’s “Product Carbon Footprint” pilot project with the aim of driving forward the development of appropriate methods for determining all climate-relevant emissions attributable to a product – reliable techniques that are capable of generating transparent and comparable results. The project participants have now presented a range of concepts for calculating and analyzing product-related green house gas emission balances.

The combination of materials is gaining importance in the light-weight construction of automobiles. In particular, aluminium sheet constructions are used for the weight reduction of car bodies. The corrosion protection in contact areas is a major challenge. Henkel has taken care of this issue in a joint project together with partners in industrial and institutional research, and has developed a new surface technology. More than 400 international guests from media, industry and society accepted Henkel’s invitation to the large anniversary gala at the Wappenhalle in Munich and celebrated the 111th birthday of Schwarzkopf until the early hours of the morning. Top models such as Eva Padberg, Franziska Knuppe and Bojana Panic were among the glamorous guests that walked the red carpet. After the welcoming address by Hans Van Bylen, Executive Vice President Cosmetics/Body Care Henkel, Tina Müller, Corporate Senior Vice President, responsible for the worldwide hair, face and oral products business at Henkel, and Norbert Koll, Corporate Senior Vice President Schwarzkopf Professional, the guests let themselves be inspired by the 111-year long history and the numerous innovations of Schwarzkopf while enjoying cocktails and finger food. A large brand history exhibition showed not only the milestones from the past, but also the current new products and innovations of 2009. Video projections on the topic by media artist Dirk Bonn were met by enthusiasm from the audience and clearly set the international standard.

It was 111 years ago that the chemist Hans Schwarzkopf ran his small drugstore in Berlin.
