MIT Initiative: Make an Impact on Tomorrow
We support the MIT projects of our employees and retirees through donations in kind, product donations, financial aid, special paid leave and the provision of technical advice. The greater the volunteering commitment, the higher the level of support available from Henkel. In this way, we ensure that our funds are used where they are most urgently needed – in their entirety, with responsibility and with appropriate transparency.
The volunteer projects that Henkel supports through MIT are as diverse as the company itself and its around 47,000 strong workforce: restorations of local children's playgrounds, support of volunteer fire departments for youngsters, refurbishing village homes in the mountains of Guatemala, construction of houses for needy families in Cambodia, building kindergarten in Serbia, provision of teaching materials and construction of sanitary facilities at two schools in Nigeria or voluntary work as a soccer youth coach. These are just a few examples of the impressive MIT projects that have been initiated throughout the world.
By establishing the MIT Initiative in 1998, Henkel became one of the first German companies to include the voluntary social engagement of its employees and retirees as a significant element of its corporate social responsibility policy. MIT is implemented at all Henkel locations worldwide.
The purpose of the MIT Initiative is to promote the social involvement of Henkel's employees and retirees throughout the world. By supporting their employee’s social engagement Henkel sees important benefits. Better teamwork, greater motivation in their job and closer identification with their employer are just some of the positive results that volunteers report. Furthermore the volunteers play a pivotal role as a link between Henkel and its social environment. They are “ambassadors” for Henkel and its corporate culture.
Most of the employees who are involved as volunteers are highly motivated at their workplace and bring their social competence and enthusiasm to the job. They feel that they can make a difference and can change things – perhaps more than they had ever thought possible. They are proud that their employer supports their social engagement.
