For the eighth consecutive year, Henkel has been listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World) and Dow Jones Sustainability Index Europe (DJSI Europe). The inclusion in both indices confirms Henkel’s excellent performance amongst the leading companies in the Household Products category.

Sustainable Surface Treatment Technologies for Aluminium 

As the world’s leading solutions provider for adhesives, sealants and functional coatings, Henkel too will be present at “Aluminium 2014” – the world’s leading B2B platform for the aluminium industry and its most important applications – which takes place in Düsseldorf/Germany from October 7 through October 9 this year. The company offers a wide range of products in the field of aluminium pretreatment to help operators make their production processes more efficient, more cost-effective and more sustainable. Henkel’s electro-ceramic coatings, for example, ensure that aluminium surfaces are effectively protected against wear and corrosion – even when exposed to high temperatures.

With its Le Chat brand, Persil’s local sister brand, the French Laundry & Home Care team has positioned sustainability as a key factor of its strategy. Drawing upon the legitimacy of one of its key products (“Le Chat Eco Efficacité” – eco-efficiency – certified by the official European Eco Label since 2013), the French team has launched a new nationwide initiative called “Lavons mieux!” (Let’s wash in a better way!).

Worth a Thousand Words 

Since 1998, Henkel has been supporting its employees and retirees in their social volunteering activities through the MIT initiative (MIT = Make an Impact on Tomorrow). Also in this year, Henkel has invited these volunteers to submit their best pictures. Now the results are in: the winning pictures of the 2014 MIT Photo Competition show once again the broad variety of volunteer projects that Henkel employees and retirees get involved in. 

Development of high-performance enzymes
Enzymes for more sustainability 

The use of high-performance enzymes in laundry and home care products reduces the amount of resources and raw materials used. Henkel Research has succeeded in combining surfactants and – for the first time – enzymes within a liquid hand-dishwashing product so that starch remains can be quickly removed. Aside from improved product performance, this also means a reduction in CO2 emissions amounting to some 12,000 metric tons per year.

Henkel Philippines received the Best Environmental Disclosure and the Special Recognition for Water Management awards at the Sustainable Business Awards (SBA) Philippines on July 14, 2014. Organized by the Global Initiatives Group in conjunction with Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC), the awards recognize companies that are sustainable in all aspects of their business.

Through Purex’s “Bright Washes, Bright Wishes” campaign, the Henkel brand was able to make the dreams of Jesus’ Make-A-Wish come true. Ten-year-old Jesus suffers from cystic fibrosis and dreams of traveling to Washington D.C. to expand on his passion for American history.

What is glue made from? And what actually goes into detergents? These are just two of the many questions investigated by curious elementary school children in Henkel’s Forscherwelt (“Researchers’ World”). Since its launch in 2011, the education project has attracted a great deal of interest in Germany. Now the initiative is being rolled out to Argentina, where it is introducing children to the exciting world of science.

With its “DiversCity” Prize, granted for the fourth time, the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry aims to honor outstanding projects in the field of diversity management as a means of strengthening corporate understanding of this issue for the future. The objective is to recognize, promote and constructively take advantage of the diversity of the individual skills, competencies and points of view of employees as well as of customers and suppliers. Henkel CEE was the only company nominated in two of the four categories and won the award in the special category “Ethnic Economies”.

Let’s Go and Help 

Two activities organized under the banner of the sport and charity initiative "Let's go and help" saw 80 Henkel employees from throughout Poland donning pedometers and collecting nearly 10,000 euros. The funds collected have been applied in full to the causes of the Warsaw Open Door Association, whose mission is to prevent exclusion and marginalization of people experiencing life’s difficulties.

Within just a week, a team of the company’s employees had built a new home for a family of seven in the Romanian town of Ploieşti. The inaugurating ceremony of Germany’s “Special Olympics Deutschland” and the subsequent torch relay through downtown Berlin delighted over 150 participants and guests attending. Following its first leg in the German capital, the flame symbolizing the spirit of the Special Olympics will gradually make its way to the Games venue, Düsseldorf. And in the meantime, the Henkel helper team is getting ready. Numbering 56, the company’s employees will be supporting the athletes in various ways during the competition.

Henkel supports Walmart’s recently announced laundry compaction initiative to partner with manufacturers to cut the amount of water by 25% in each dose of liquid laundry detergent by 2018. This effort aligns with Henkel’s long-term sustainability strategy, to achieve more with less.

Scholarship and grant to fund preventive health programs 

In support of public health and the local community, the Henkel Scottsdale Hispanic Professional Society (HPS) has created the first Scottsdale Employee Resource Group scholarship. HPS partnered with University of Arizona’s College of Public Health to identify applicants for the scholarship and grant. The applicants were asked to choose a project they are working on and share with Henkel how they would use the grant money to help fund their project. Henkel received a wide array of projects, ranging from immunizations to affordable housing.

Little patients’ faces lit up when special guest Mr Pritt joined their party at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, South Africa. The event was part of the “Smile Foundation’s Smile Week” at the hospital. The NGO “Smile Foundation” provides life-changing surgeries for children with facial abnormalities during weeks such as this one.

A simple change to the waste water process at Henkel’s adhesive plant in Seven Hills, Sydney, has had a major impact on the amount of waste water the plant produces and, within six months, the team had achieved its goal of reducing process waste water generated by 50 per cent.

Henkel Ibérica is extending its social engagement program with the launch of a new campaign to raise awareness of the need for solidarity in times of crisis. Under the slogan “Ahorra y súmate a la solidaridad” (“Save and Show Solidarity”), consumers of Henkel Beauty Care’s premium brands are being offered “solidarity savings” on products, triggering equivalent product donations by the company to the Red Cross on their behalf.

On March 24, 2014, the official opening ceremony of the Henkel initiative “Forscherwelt” (Researchers’ World) took place at the Experimentanium Interactive Science Museum in Moscow. Approximately 50 children visited the museum to participate in the first open lessons. Two lessons were held on that day, and young visitors enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the research work and to conduct a series of experiments.

For the last 50 years, Henkel’s main production facility in the Iberian Peninsula has been in Montornès del Vallès. Forscherwelt goes to Russia 

Henkel’s child education initiative “Forscherwelt” (Researchers’ World) has been a presence in Düsseldorf, Germany, for almost three years. And now it is to be “exported” to Russia with a view to kindling the curiosity of children there – for example in the Moscow Science Museum “Experimentarium.”

Many Henkel employees volunteer for social projects in their free time and are supported by their employer in doing so. Since 2010, the Henkel Fire Service has been heavily engaged in a social project in Turkey. Specifically, it has been supporting the local fire department in the town of Türkeli – through donations and training, and most recently through an aid package to help repair flood damages. Last year, a team of Henkel firefighters also went to visit their counterparts in Turkey, taking with them a fire engine that they gave to their hosts.

The Indola salons, the Indola marketing team and the Indola technical team in the Netherlands initiated numerous activities to collect money for the benefit campaign “Serious Request” of the Dutch radio station 3FM and the Red Cross - and raised more than 15,000 euros!

Warm winter in China 

The funding from the “Make an Impact on Tomorrow” (MIT) initiative helps to prepare Spring Festival gift bags for 150 children in remote China. “Grateful Green” is a MIT project since 2012 that aims to help people in need and brighten up their lives. This year, 150 customized school bags were funded by MIT. Additionally, the employees were called for their time and commitment on sponsoring a Grateful Green Gift Bag to fill it with specified items, including a warm piece of clothing, some books and dictionaries, a special gift, a Beauty Care product, and a card with the sponsor’s personalized notes on it. The individual information on each child is provided to make sure the gifts are tailor-made for those who receive the Grateful Green gift bags. In January 2014, two Grateful Green ambassadors, Lucy Zhang and Lili Shen, went to the school, handed out the bags, talked to the students, and delivered the employees’ wishes.

Keeping Henkel’s value of social responsibility and its commitment towards shaping the society, Henkel India took the initiative of working together with ‘Punarvas School’ located in Mumbai for the renovation of bathroom and toilet in the school building.
