Our 5-year targets until 2015
Thanks to the high level of commitment of our employees, Henkel already reached its 2012 sustainability targets in 2010 - two years ahead of plan. But this is no reason for us to sit back and relax. In order to keep the business moving towards our 20-year goal of “Factor 3”, we have set new ambitious targets for our operations, measured against the progress achieved up to 2010. Until 2015, we aim to achieve another 15 percent reduction per production unit in the focal areas energy, water and waste. At the same time, we aim to create more value by achieving a 10 increase in net external sales per production unit. To keep working towards our long-term goal of “zero accident”, we aim for another 20 percent decline in our incident rate. Our objectives for the focal area "social progress" are difficult to put in numbers. Nonetheless, many of our activities document our progress also in this area.
Overall, our efforts should translate into a 30 percent efficiency improvement over the next five years (meaning 5 to 6 percent per year). While the targets still concentrate primarily on identifying possible improvements regarding our own products and production processes, we also aim to expand analysis and data generation to our entire value chain - including our supplier base and the usage of our products by customers and consumers.
Our focal areas and company-wide targets 2010 until 2015
As long ago as the 1980s, in our “Principles and Objectives of Environmental Protection and Safety,” we committed to promoting occupational health and safety, conserving resources, and reducing emissions. In the ten years from 1998 until 2007 alone, we have reduced occupational accidents by 86 percent, water consumption by 48 percent, energy consumption by 40 percent and waste generation by 37 percent. Thanks to the savings in energy consumption, we have also been able to reduce the associated carbon dioxide emissions by 33 percent. On the basis of the progress achieved by 2007, we defined further corporate targets for the year 2012. Thanks to the high level of commitment of our employees, we were already able to achieve the targets for our production sites by 2010:
