Henkel will reduce fossil-based virgin plastic by 50 percent

Henkel is stepping up its commitment for sustainability and has set further ambitious packaging targets for 2025 to promote a circular economy. By then, 100 percent of Henkel's packaging will be recyclable or reusable* and the company will reduce fossil-based virgin plastics by 50 percent in its consumer goods packaging. Additionally, Henkel wants to contribute to avoiding plastic waste being disposed in the environment.

Economic slowdown and increased investments impact performance

Henkel reports mixed business performance in 2019 and gives outlook for 2020

  • 2019 results, impacted by slowing economic growth and increased investments in consumer businesses and digitalization across the company:
    • Sales rise by 1.1% to 20,114 million euros, organic sales stable
    • Adjusted* EBIT margin at 16.0% (-1.6 pp)
    • Adjusted* earnings per preferred share (EPS) reach 5.43 euros, nominal -9.7%, at constant exchange rates -10.1%
    • Free cash flow: 2,471 million euros (+554 million euros)
    • Dividend** on prior-year level: 1.85 euro per preferred share
  • Outlook for 2020: further step-up in growth investments in an uncertain industrial market environment
    • Organic sales growth: 0 – 2%
    • Adjusted* EBIT margin: around 15%
    • Adjusted* EPS: decrease in the mid- to high single-digit percentage range at constant exchange rates

Henkel drives further progress in sustainable packaging

All Perwoll bottles in Western Europe with 25 percent recycled plastic

Together with packaging manufacturer ALPLA, Henkel has achieved a further step in its activities in the field of sustainable packaging: From now on Perwoll bottles in Western Europe will not only be fully recyclable, but also contain 25 percent recycled PE (polyethylene) from post-consumer sources as standard.

Battery modules with cylindrical cells are constructed with Covestro’s Bayblend® material and efficiently assembled with Henkel’s Loctite adhesive.

Adhesive solutions for efficient Li-ion cell assembly

As automotive electrification continues to evolve, powerful lithium-ion (li-ion) battery architectures are at the center of discussions around electric vehicles. While battery system designs vary by manufacturer, the joint performance objectives for all automotive battery technologies are longer lifetime, operational safety, cost efficiency and reliability. In their most recent collaboration, Henkel and Covestro developed a solution enabling the efficient fixation of cylindrical li-ion battery cells inside a plastic cell holder. The solution is based on a UV-curing adhesive from Henkel and a UV-transparent polycarbonate blend from Covestro.

Technomelt GA 3980 Ultra is suitable for all melting systems and can be used universally for a variety of binding applications.
