Job Summary:

  • We are seeking an energetic and dynamic individual for the Packaging Engineer role in our Trumbull, CT Research & Development Center.
  • The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage demanding workloads are key elements of success.
  • This position will report to the Manager of Packaging Technology and will be responsible for key development projects within the Home Care category.
  • Typical brands associated with this position are Snuggle, Purex, Sun, Sunlight, Renuzit, Soft Scrub and Combat, as well as numerous Retailer branded products.
  • The candidate is expected to represent R&D as the packaging SME on cross-functional teams for both national & retail brands for North America in their respective product lines.
  • The position will also be tasked with leading and driving implementation of aggressive cost savings goals and act as a lead engineer across their categories to represent the R&D Packaging Team on the cross functional Cost Chase team.
  • The ideal candidate must have a demonstrated ability to think strategically while providing detailed packaging solutions to the business ambitions.
  • Previous experience with the development, testing and execution of consumer products packaging programs with minimal oversight is a must.
  • Experience in injection molding and bottle blowing are highly desirable.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Packaging thought leader representing the Home Care category for R&D NA.
  • Design, develop and commercialize packaging programs that support Henkel NA Home Care product lines and meet our customer needs.
  • Maintain a focused knowledge of sustainability initiatives and future trends beneficial to Henkel goals.
  • Represent R&D as a technical expert and face of packaging to the broader community of Marketing, Sales, Supply Chain, Quality, Project Management and plant manufacturing.
  • Create & maintain packaging specifications & pallet patterns associated with projects.
  • Collaborate with internal/external partners and cross functional work teams to optimize package designs for product launches.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and deliver gross margin improvement projects through the optimization of primary & secondary package design or redesign of components to enhance manufacturing capabilities.
  • Leverage technical packaging knowledge to assist the Quality Assurance organization in solving packaging related quality issues and providing guidance or process improvements that minimize recurrence.
  • Utilize effective time management skills to assure required project milestones are met amongst multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Provide technical support to ensure quality standards, package performance, and continued supply of products and packaging materials. Participates on continuous improvement teams.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science in Packaging Engineering or related engineering field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Injection Stretch Blow Molding of bottles.
  • Three (3) or more years of professional experience in the Packaging field.
  • Demonstrated leadership & communication skills on cross functional teams involving marketing, sales, purchasing and manufacturing in the development of new products in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of packaging technical procedures commonly used in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes related to plastics extrusion blow molding, injection molding, flexible packaging (sachets & pouches) and secondary packaging materials/processes.
  • Experience in trigger sprayer and dispensing systems for packaging a plus.
  • Experience in the use of statistical tools for problem solving.
  • Proficient in the use Microsoft Office software, Microsoft Project, CAPE or TOPS.
  • Excellent Project Management and business skills.
  • Excellent ability to understand the levers of R&D impact on brand P&L’s.
  • Self-starter, autonomous and demonstrated ability to bring new unsolicited ideas and solutions to the table.
  • Ability to travel approximately 15%.
