The role of the Development Chemist is to develop new materials or modify existing products in line with the market or customer needs. He/she should ensure that these products have been developed following all safety and quality processes and documentation requirements. In order to do this he/she need to ensure that they have a good knowledge of the latest developments in the application, product and new raw material areas relevant to their area of expertise.


  • Developing new products in support of marketing or specific customer requests as laid out in the quality procedures in order to grow AE sales
  • Reformulating products if raw materials have been changed and ensure performance has not been compromised in order to support existing AE sales
  • Ensuring all projects are written up and work communicated globally with other parts of Henkel to ensure that latest and best information is available in support of customers
  • Developing any new product quality test procedures in support of product development and quality assurance
  • Supporting QA function in resolution of customer complaints in production
  • Regularly preparing and deliverering presentations at internal and external conferences, trade shows and scientific association meetings regarding avenues of research and new advances      
  • Developing and preparing competitive intelligence documents used in formulation of patents, trademarks and trade secrets for specific markets or clients.
  • Applying expert knowledge to research and development platforms for market or client applications
  • Planing and executing project plans to deliver results and manages projects or concurrent projects of defined scope

 Accountabilities/Authorities (re. Quality financial):

  • Contributing actively to a safe working environment by applying safety procedures while ensuring that they and any visitors/subcontractors they may be working with do not break any safety rules
  • Contributing to the development of product formulations, processes
  • Ensuring that Technicians work in a safe manner in line with Henkel SHE policy and has the maximum opportunity to develop within that role
  • Ensuring all work is done in line with IATF 16949 and ISO 14001
  • Ensuring working costs are kept as low as possible and that approval is asked for budget related expenses


  • PhD in Chemistry
  • Preferably experience in epoxy and/or acrylate chemistry
  • Ability to work on several tasks simultaneously as well as prioritize between customers. 
  • Ability to file and apply for patents
  • Ability to converse and write reports in English in order to communicate with customers and other Henkel locations
  • Willing to travel (10 % of time) throughout Europe and occasionally globally to customer and other facilities
