Product Development Scientist

The Senior Scientist, Product Development is responsible for developing new products and formulas to meet the needs of our consumers in new and unique ways.   The job requires a fundamental understanding of the needs and desires of our consumers and customers. The candidate should possess strong communication skills since they will be expected to interface with marketing and be able to translate consumer needs to the development of a commercial product.  The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of chemistry to help develop and execute novel technical solutions, while supporting the business strategy for successful product launches.  The job will involve conducting hands-on laboratory work such as planning and execution of laboratory experiments, measurement of product properties, stability, and performance.  


  • Utilizes understanding of chemistry to understand ingredient interactions as well as structure-function relationships. Utilizes experimental designs for optimal formulation development
  • Works with third party suppliers to bring new chemistries to the category.   
  • Works on projects as a member of an integrated, cross functional project team. This includes working with Marketing counterparts to identify consumer/customer needs and translating these needs into technical solutions.
  • Works closely with packaging, process development, and manufacturing during development and commercialization of relevant products.
  • Maintains excellent lab book documentation of experimental results, conclusions, and next steps.
  • Plans and schedules project tasks related to laboratory experiments and consumer trials.  Reports data, progress, and/or issues on a timely basis.
  • Runs standard and non-standard chemical, physical, or application tests to obtain data to evaluate composition and performance of competitive offerings.
  • Responsible for completing product development documentation tasks as part of the master data process. 
  • Responsible for safe working conditions in a chemical laboratory setting. Responsible for following all applicable Federal, State, and Local health, safety, and environmental regulations, as per corporate health, safety, and environmental policies.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Product Design, or related field. Experience in Consumer product development, 5+ years  
  • Relevant product development experience in consumer packaged goods preferred.
  • Ability to utilize good judgement to make timely, practical, and technically sound decisions.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.  Ability to work well as part of a small, success-focused team.
