The Future of Automotive Painting
Henkel received two coveted awards at this year’s SURCAR, the world’s leading conference on the subject of automotive surface treatment. The event has been taking place every second year in Cannes (France) since 1964. In addition, the conference moved to Asia Pacific this year, an important region for automotive growth. Over 300 decision makers from more than 20 countries met in Shanghai (China) for the very first time. Under the motto “Growth Facing Sustainability” the focus was on new, innovative technological trends in the fields of painting and coating as well as on automotive paint finishing, especially in the Asian market. Experts from Henkel participated in the conference with a number of presentations – and were subsequently chosen by the jury for both the “Award for Innovation” and the “Award for Technology.”
Henkel experts contributed to the 27th edition of the SURCAR conference with three presentations dedicated to new, sustainable surface treatment technologies for the automobile industry. The speeches also impressed the jury of the Technical Committee which, at the end of the conference, conferred three awards for outstanding achievements within the industry. Two of them went to Henkel.
Dr. Peter Born, Technical Director Transport & Metal at Henkel, held a presentation on the subject of “New sustainable sealants for paintshop applications based on renewable raw materials” – and received the “Award for Innovation” honoring innovative solutions developed within a company's research activities.
The “Award for Technology”, which is related to implementing a new technology into new line application in serial automotive production, was given to Dr. Stephan Winkels, Regional Key Account Director Automotive Henkel Asia-Pacific, for his speech on the subject “New world class technologies and compact process approach for a self-sufficient paintshop, increasing energy savings and reducing waste”. This was part of a common presentation with Qoros as OEM, a paint company and an engineering company about the successful start of production of the Qoros paintshop. Henkel's contribution was the Bonderite TecTalis process as lean and environmental sound pretreatment process. Mark Hyde, Regional Business Director Asia-Pacific Transport & Metal, also gave a presentation on the topic “New substrates for light weighting and how pretreatment processes have to react”, referring particularly to multi-material concepts as one of the key trends in the automotive industry.
As a company that offers customers worldwide tailor-made solutions with adhesives, sealants and functional coatings, Henkel specifically utilizes industrial conferences like SURCAR to engage with a broad range of partners on the opportunities and challenges affecting their industry. Such events are an ideal forum for discussing each other’s experiences and specific requirements.
