Novelis and Henkel partner on advanced bonding technology for aluminum vehicles

Partnership for the Automotive Future

Bonderite M-NT 8453 surface pre-treatment poised to set new standard in the global auto industry, bringing added performance and versatility to the manufacturing process.

Henkel Adhesive Technologies, the leading solution provider for adhesives, sealants and functional coatings and Novelis, the world leader in automotive aluminum sheet, announced the signing of a long-term agreement to collaborate on the development of advanced bonding technologies for the use of aluminum in high-volume vehicles.

Both partners aim for making more aluminum-intensive vehicles a reality. The companies agreed on a commitment to technology innovation in order to develop industry-wide solutions without barriers to adoption.

The first product to launch as a result of this partnership is Bonderite M-NT 8453, the latest evolution in aluminum surface pre-treatments, providing a cost-effective adhesive bonding system for the most demanding vehicle requirements. The chrome-free conversion coating improves the adhesion and durability of bonded joints in vehicle structures as well as paint finishes on exterior components.

“The collaboration between Henkel and Novelis allows us to combine our respective areas of expertise – surface treatment and aluminum – to address aluminum processing and application challenges for use in vehicles,” said Eric Slamans, Vice President, Metals and Coil, Henkel Adhesive Technologies, Transport and Metal. “Bonderite M-NT 8453 extends the bonding performance and cost effectiveness of aluminum solutions to help automakers achieve their lightweighting and fuel economy goals. In partnership with Novelis, we will continue to advance bonding technologies to establish new standards of performance in the marketplace.”
