Caravan Salon 2016 at Dusseldorf trade fair

From screws and bolts to adhesives – gluing the caravan

Some 590 exhibitors will be presenting a mix of products, innovations and offers pertaining to caravan travel at the world’s leading trade fair for motor homes and caravans – this year, the exhibition is larger than ever before. Henkel Adhesive Technologies is an important supplier to the industry.

Elddis, a manufacturer of caravans, has adapted its assembly methods, switching from screws and bolts to adhesives.

Adhesives, sealants and functional coatings are used in many parts of all kind of vehicles, including pre-treatments of metal surfaces, in engines, structural elements and in the gluing of windshields and windows. For example, the English caravan and motorhome manufacturer, Elddis, optimized its production methods some years ago by introducing Henkel-technologies across its entire operations.

Screws and rivets were used yesterday; today, modern assembly methods use more adhesives

Elddis realized that its industry was facing water ingress problems that were caused by screw and rivet bonds. At the time the manufacturer had no experience with using adhesives in vehicle construction. With the support of experts from Henkel, Elddis developed a caravan prototype in which many of the bonds were glued. The vehicle exceeded expectations – today Elddis has replaced about 90 percent of all screws in its caravans with adhesive bonds.

The results of Elddis’ recent new product development can be seen in their video, which is available on their homepage.
