Henkel’s involvement in the adhesives industry was a coincidence which turned out to be a great fortune: It was in 1923 when the labeling of some of its own consumer products was threatened due to an interruption in the supply of glue. Since then, Henkel has been involved in the production of its own adhesives for a wide variety of products and industries. Today, Henkel Adhesive Technologies is a leading solution provider for adhesives, sealants and functional coatings worldwide.
In 2016, the business unit generated sales of 8,961 million euros, 48 percent of total company sales. As a market leader, the Adhesive Technologies business unit creates high-impact solutions worldwide through groundbreaking innovations and close partnerships with its customers. The business areas for industrial customers are: Packaging and Consumer Goods Adhesives; Transport and Metal; General Industry; and Electronics. Our Adhesives for Consumers, Craftsmen and Building business area markets an extensive range of brand-name products for private, trade and constructionusers. In 2016, we generated around 30 percent of our sales with products launched onto the market in the last five years.

Thirty percent of sales within Adhesive Technologies come from products that are less than five years old. Clearly defined focus areas and target markets and close monitoring of mega trends helps identify new areas for research by pinpointing possible incremental improvements of existing technologies and identifying disruptive technologies that can transform an entire value chain and create completely new markets. Adhesive Technologies continually reviews its portfolio to make sure innovation drives growth in the future – as it has in the past.
