Cutting a new path: through hairdressing toward a self-empowered future

Two journeys that show how Schwarzkopf Professional’s Shaping Futures initiative opens up new perspectives for young adults facing social and economic barriers

Social Engagement Sep 23, 2025

A chair, a mirror, a pair of scissors – sometimes that’s all it takes to change a life. For 15 years, Schwarzkopf Professional’s global education initiative Shaping Futures has shown how hairdressing can become a real career path for young adults navigating challenging life circumstances. In collaboration with local partner organizations, Shaping Futures offers hands-on training in hairdressing – and thereby, creates new opportunities in the job market. Since the initiative’s start, volunteer trainers have been active in 33 countries around the world and supported nearly 4,000 participants on their journey to a self-determined life. This story highlights two particularly inspiring journeys that show just how diverse and impactful this support can be: Guina from Brazil, who now empowers others herself as a freelance technical promoter for Schwarzkopf Professional and Authentic Beauty Concept, and Noemí from Spain, who works with great passion at the Schwarzkopf Academy in Barcelona. Their stories offer hope and encouragement – and demonstrate what’s possible when potential is recognized and nurtured.

Guina’s story:

Courage, talent, and the power of giving back

Name: Guina Domingos

Origin: Brazil

Role at Shaping Futures: Former participant, now freelance technical promoter and brand ambassador for Schwarzkopf Professional and Authentic Beauty Concept

Guina’s career began with first courses in hairdressing – but the decisive turning point came when she joined the Shaping Futures program in Brazil. The opportunity arose through a partnership with the LGBTQ+ organization It Gets Better, which empowers young people from underrepresented communities around the world. In Latin America, Shaping Futures collaborates with this initiative to offer inclusive training programs – specifically for individuals who often don’t receive fair opportunities in the job market.

Guina seized this opportunity with full energy. Her talent, professionalism, and digital savvy quickly made her stand out. Today, she works as a freelance technical promoter for Schwarzkopf Professional and Authentic Beauty Concept, advises renowned salons like Retro Salon 1838 and Salon Suzane Ribeiro, while also developing customized training concepts and brand content. Her work combines creativity with business success – for salons and for herself.

Guina is a powerful example of what’s possible when support meets real potential. She is a role model for many – not only within the LGBTQ+ community, but for anyone seeking their place in the world of hairdressing.

Noemí’s story:

A journey to more confidence

Name: Noemí Lopez

Origin: Barcelona, Spain

Role at Shaping Futures: Former participant, now employee at the Schwarzkopf Professional Academy in Barcelona

Noemí is a young woman who approaches life with great openness and a love of learning. She lives with Down syndrome and has gained experience in various supported work environments. It was through the Fundació Catalana Síndrome de Down (FCSD) that she first learned about the Shaping Futures program – and there, she discovered a new passion: hairdressing. A field she had barely encountered before, but one that quickly revealed itself as a real opportunity.

The inclusive training at Schwarzkopf in Barcelona became a turning point for her. Noemí was fully engaged, especially fascinated by the hands-on aspects of the training. “This experience changed me. I learned to focus, to take on responsibility – and so much about hairdressing, which I love,” she says. After completing the program, she was offered a job at the Schwarzkopf Professional Academy. She now works there four days a week with her team, taking on tasks reliably and with great care. “I love my job – every day is different, and I never get bored,” she says.

For her former trainer, Meritxell Perez, Noemí is a role model for true inclusion. Today, the two work together at the Schwarzkopf Professional Academy: “Her warmth, dedication, and desire to grow have enriched the entire team.” Noemí’s story shows that when people are trusted to realize their potential, real success stories emerge – for individuals and for society as a whole.
